Description
Dettifoss Waterfall is located in northern Iceland is said to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. It stands 148 ft. tall and 330 feet wide and has a flow of 6186 cubic feet per second. The power of the falls is felt in the thunderous sound made by the flowing water. The water is fed by the powerful river glacier Jokulsa a Fjollum which flows from the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull. This waterfall and its canyon are part of the Vatnajokull National Park, the largest national park in Iceland.
There are two access roads to Dettifoss - one on the east side and one on the west side. The road on the east side is closed some of the time, so do check before trying this side.(When we were there in May, 2022, the east road was still closed) These images were taken on the west side.
Hiking to Dettifoss is quite easy (west side). There is a large parking lot just off the road (with services) and the hike, itself, is moderate. Unfortunately on my two attempts to photograph Dettifoss we encountered less than ideal weather, so this image was the best I could obtain. However, if one plans an extended trip to Iceland, this waterfall is not to be missed.
