The Vatican Museum is a public art and sculpture museum in Vatican City. Established in the early 16th century by Pope Julius II the museum contains nearly 70,000 works of art of which 20,000 are on display. The museum contains 54 galleries, of which the Sistine and its ceiling, painted by Michelangelo, are the most famous. The Vatican Museum is the fourth most visited art museum in the world.
