The Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, U.S.A. near the southern Utah border. It was built from 1956-1966 and formed Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S., covering an area of 162,000 acres. The dam is the second largest dam in the U.S., second only to the Hoover Dam.
The Glen Canyon Dam created a giant reservoir that provides water and hydroelectricity to seven western U.S. states, which have undergone tremendous growth since its construction. The dam also created Lake Powell, which provides a large recreational area in addition to water storage and hydroelectricity. The lake has a shoreline of nearly 2000 miles, making it a perfect destination for fishing, water sports and photography.
Since its initial filling in 1980, Lake Powell's water level has fluctuated greatly, sometimes changing over 100 feet, depending on the amount of snowfall in the Rocky Mountains.
