Description
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a marvel of engineering and construction. Construction of the tower was begun in1173 and the tower began to lean upon attaining the second level. Over the next 800 years the Romanesque style tower continued to lean more and more and numerous attempts to correct the problem have been attempted, to no avail, over the years. Even modern engineers have been unable to completely stop the leaning process. Of course, the basic cause of the problem is the underlying soil, which was not sufficiently strong to support the tower. But, after being closed to visitors several times over the years, the tower re-opened to visitors around 2013+/-. The Leaning Tower of Pisa averages 184 feet tall and weighs about 16,000 tons. It has 296 steps and 207 columns and, as of 1990, it leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees. Because of the tilt, the upper floors were built with one side slightly taller than the other. The purpose of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is to serve as the bell tower for the adjacent cathedral, or Duomo ( which, by the way, does not lean). The entire complex is called the Campo dei Miracoli.
