Description
Nestled between two mountains in northeastern Iceland, this quiet town stretches along the south side of a fjord and is set around a nice lagoon. It was settled around 1848 by Norwegian fisherman and some of their original wooden buildings still stand in the town. The road to Seydisfdordur (Rt.93) goes over a mountain pass and connects the town to the larger town of Egilsstadir, about 17 miles to the west. The town is quite quaint and features some interesting painted buildings, a small harbor and is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. It remains a significant fishing port but its main focus today is tourism.
