Description
Svartifoss Waterfall is a magnificent waterfall located a short distance off the Ring Road in southeast Iceland. The waterfall tumbles down 80 ft. over a cliff that is bordered on both sides by tall basalt columns. The hexagonal columns form inside a lava flow which then cools extremely slowly, giving rise to crystallization. Beneath the base of the waterfall lies the remains of column shards that have broken off over the years.
The hike to Svartifoss begins at the visitor center in Skaftafell. The hike is about 1 mile with an 850 ft. elevation gain. The path to the falls is fairly smooth and not too difficult, but the trip is well-worth the effort. There are fantastic views of the falls from a hilltop above the falls as well as from a platform near the base of the falls.
There are many waterfalls in Iceland (as well as around the world), but this waterfall, with its unique basalt columns makes Svartifoss one of a kind.
