Description
Shukkeien Garden was begun in 1620 during the Edo period on the order of Asano Nagaakira, daimyo of the Hiroshima han. The seventh lord of the han summonded an expert in the construction of Japanese gardens from Kyoto who assisted in construction of the garden. During the Meiji period the garden served as the villa of the Asano family. The Imperial General Headquarters were briefly relocated to Hiroshima and the Emperor Meiji lodged at the villa. The gardens suffered extensive damage in WWII and became a refuge for some of the victims of the attack. After renovations in reopened in 1951.
