Description
The historic mountain village of Shirakawa-go is one of three historic villages covering 170 acres in the remote Shogawa river valley in central Japan. The valley is a mountain region with considerable snowfall and the village is well known for its cluster of farmhouses, constructed in the architectural style known as Gassho-zukuri, which features roofs that are designed to easily shed snow. The remoteness of this region severely restricted its connection to the outside world until the 1950's. This isolation led to the development of its unique culture and traditions, including the Gassho-style farmhouses, that have been handed down through the generations. Because of the mountainous terrain of the region agriculture was severely limited. Since rice farming was limited the farmers came up with other marketable products such as Japanese paper, nitre for gunpowder and silkworm farming.
House construction consisted of steep, thickly thatched roofs, designed to be strong enough to hold and shed the heavy winter snowfall. Most housed were multi-story to house extended families.
The Shirakawa-go village was designated by UNESCO as one of its World Heritage Sites.
