Description
Alcatraz Island is located in San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles offshore from the mainland. The small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, military fortification, military prison, and a federal prison. The water currents around the island are so strong that it was said that no one could escape the island alive. The Federal Prison operated from 1934 until 1963, and housed some of the most notorious criminals in American History.
Today, Alcatraz is operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area.
