Artist's Description
The Varsity (as locals refer to it) is the world's largest drive-in restaurant. It was started in 1928 by Frank Gordy, who attended Georgia Tech for a short time. Upon leaving Georgia Tech he went up the street (there was no freeway then) and opened a hot dog stand, primarily catering to Georgia Tech students. Over the years the business grew to become enormously successful. Any day of the week there are lines waiting to hear the famous words "whaduyahave" from one of the fast-moving Varsity employees. On Georgia Tech football game days it is almost impossible to get near the place, but it is busy all the time. In a single day the Varsity serves up 2 miles of hot dogs, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 300 gallons of chili, and 3000 pounds of onions. The comedian Nipsey Russell began his career as a carhop in the 1940's. When locals feel they need a break from home-style cooking they often say "Lets go to "The V".
