Description
Atlantic Station is a multi-use development on the northwestern edge of Midtown Atlanta, Ga., comprising a retail district, office buildings, condominiums, townhomes and apartment buildings. It is located on the site of the former Atlantic Steel Company, which operated for many years, before finally closing in the 1990's. The brownfield site required years and millions of dollars to clean up and thus delayed the construction of the Atlantic Station development. The development was designed by architect, John Clark, while working at Development Design Group, Inc. in Baltimore. It was designed with energy efficiency in mind and many of its buildings carry the LEED certification. In October, 2003, the first residents moved into the development. In January, 2004, the 17th Street bridge over the midtown freeway was completed, and in October, 2005, the first retail establishments opened.
Atlantic Station received the EPA's Phoenix award in 2004, as the best national brownfield redevelopment.
