Description
The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually operated cable car system. The idea for the system came from Andrew Smith Hallidie, reportedly after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn streetcar slid backwards killing the horses.
The San Francisco cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transportation network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway. Only three of the original 23 lines are still in operation - two from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf and one along California Street.
Although the cable cars are still used by commuters, the vast majority of the seven million annual passengers are tourists, many of whom wait hours to be able to ride.
The San Francisco Cable Cars are among the most significant tourist attractions in the City and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
