Description
The mesa arch and its view over Canyonlands is one of the highlights of a visit to Canyonlands National Park. Set along the rim of the canyon overlook the view from the arch takes in buttes, canyons and far away views of the park.
Canyonlands National Park encombases 527 square miles of colorful landscape that has eroded into countless canyons, mesas, arches and buttes by the Colorado River, Green River and their tributaries. The park is divided into four districts: Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves.
Canyonlands is located a short drive north of Moab, in southeastern Utah, U.S.A. It was name a National Park in 1964.
The Colorado and Green Rivers merge in the Needles district, which features red and white banded rock pinnacles. The area is very rugged, and most of the Needles is accessible only by way of four-wheeled vehicles or on foot. The Island in the Sky is located to the north of the Needles and features a broad and level mesa between the Colorado and Green Rivers. This district has many viewpoints, such as the one in this image. The Maze is located west of the Colorado and Green Rivers and is the least accessible section of the park and one of the most remote areas in the United States.
The geology of Canyonlands is complex. Millions of years ago a shallow sea flooded the region; later when the sea receded erosion took place and many of the formations we see today were formed.
