Description
The Cape Florida lighthouse was first constructed in 1825 at the southern-most point of Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida. It stood 65 feet tall and was constructed of solid brick, five feet thick at the bottom and two feet thick at the top. Its purpose was to guide mariners off the Florida Reef, which starts near Key Biscayne and extends just offshore of the Florida Keys. The lighthouse was badly damaged by a hurricane in 1835, but was rebuilt in 1846. In 1855 the lighthouse was renovated and raised to a height of 95 feet. The lighthouse was later taken out of service in 1878, when a new lighthouse was built seven miles away. Over the next 100 years many activities occurred surrounding the lighthouse until, in 1978 it was restored to active service by the U. S. Coast Guard. The lighthouse was again restored in 1995 and is now part of the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.
