Artist's Description

Dead Horse Point is a State Park located near Moab, Utah, U.S.A. and adjacent to Canyonlands National Park. It features a dramatic overlook of the Colorado River from 2000 feet above. The 5362 acre park has a high desert altitude of 5900 feet and has several overlooks including the one in this image showing the Colorado River making a sharp bend around a large mesa and surrounded by higher mesas and colorful rock formations.
The name Dead Horse Point is said to have originated in the 19th century when cowboys would round up wild mustangs that roamed the area. Rumor has it that the herd was driven down the neck of the peninsula, its sheer cliffs forming a natural corral and the entrance was fenced off. For reasons unknown the herd was left or forgotten and ultimately died from the harsh desert elements.
For visitors today the view of the gooseneck in the Colorado River is reason enough to visit this beautiful park.
