Description
The Grand Prismatic Spring is located in the Midway Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. It is the third largest hot spring in the world and the largest in North America. It was identified by geologists working in the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, and named for its striking colors. Those colors match most of those seen in the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism: red, orange, yellow, green and blue. The spring is approximately 370 feet in diameter and 160 feet deep. Access to the Grand Prismatic Spring is by way of a boardwalk that circles around the site or by a 1 mile hike to a magnificent overlook. This image was taken from that overlook.
