Description
Located in southeast Iceland's Golden Circle, Guillfoss Waterfall is one of the most popular and unique waterfalls in Iceland. As the Hvita River flows southward it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages, 36 ft. and 105 ft. deep. At the bottom, a crevice about 66 ft. wide extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running down the waterfall is about 5000 cu. ft. in the summer. When the wind is blowing from the east (as in this image) the mist is blown straight into onlookers. Hence, the mist in the image. (Some people argue that Guillfoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Others argue that Dettifoss is the most powerful. Either way, Guillfoss is a beautiful and powerful waterfall and is not to be missed on a visit to Iceland.)
