Description
Hraunfossar Waterfall is one the most unique and beautiful waterfalls in all of Iceland. Rather than water flowing over a rocky cliff, as most waterfalls do, Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls with rivulets streaming out of the layers of lava rock over a distance of over 300 feet. The water comes from a clear spring surging through the lava into the beautiful, glacial turquoise blue waters of the Hvita River. Because of its unique character, Hraunfossar became a National Monument in 1987. It is definitely one not to be missed on a trip to Iceland. Hraunfossar is located is western Iceland near the town of Reykholt and the settlement of Husafell.
