Description
Johannesburg is the largest city in the country of South Africa. It is a large urban mega-city having a population of close to 14 million people, one of the 100 largest cities in the world. It is the seat of the constitutional court, the highest court in South Africa. Most of the major South African companies and banks have their main offices in Johannesburg. The city was established in 1886, following this discovery of gold nearby. Johannesburg is known for many things, one of the bleakest being the center of apartheid - the separation of whites and blacks. This condition existed for many years and brought on major problems in the area and other parts of South Africa, as well. Nelson Mandela, probably the most famous South African, was the leader of the anti-apartheid movement and ultimately was elected president of South Africa. He is memorialized in the Nelson Mandela Museum in Johannesburg.
