Description
Kennin-ji was founded in 1202 CE and claims to be the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. The monk Eisai was credited with introducing Zen to Japan and served as its founding abbot. Initially the temple consisted of seven principal buildings, but it has suffered fires and had to be rebuilt in the 13th and 16th centuries. Inside the main temple building are beautiful paintings by Hashimoto Kansetsu and Tamura Soryu and a pair of screens by Tawaraya Sotatsu
