Description
Kenrokuen Garden is Kanazawa, Japan's number one attraction. It is ranked by the Japanese as one of the top three most beautiful gardens in Japan and is a must-see for any visitor to Kanazawa. The garden was originally built as a private garden for the Maeda clan who ruled the Kaga domain for 14 generations. Over the years the garden was embellished adding streams, bridges, waterfalls and more.
Kenrokuen Garden contains about 8750 trees and 183 species of plants. Among the garden's points of interest are: the oldest fountain in Japan; a teahouse built in 1774; a rest house originally built by the 5th lord Tsunanori; a stone lantern with two legs; a "flying geese" bridge made of eleven red stones; a pagoda; and a 600 year old pine tree. In the spring the several species of cherry trees put out fabulous pink blossoms. In the fall the maples put out flaming red and orange colors. The garden epitomizes the six qualities referred to in Chinese literature of an ideal landscape: spaciousness, seclusion, human artifice, antiquity, waterways and panoramic views.
