Description
Tybee Island lighthouse is located on the northeast corner of Tybee Island, Georgia, next to the Savannah River entrance. It is one of seven remaining colonial era lighthouses, although it was modified in the mid 1800's. The current lighthouse is the fourth tower at this location but it is the first illuminated of the four. The first lighthouse was constructed at the direction of James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia Colony, in 1736. The current tower has had several color combinations, the most current colors were painted as part of a major restoration project in 1999. The lighthouse is now under the possession of the Tybee Island Historical Society.
