Description
The Longley Covered Bridge crossed the Trout River near Montgomery, Vermont. Built in 1863, the Longley Covered Bridge utilized the Town Lattice bridge design, which was very common in Vermont in that time. The bridge is the oldest of a group of covered bridges in the Montgomery area built by brothers Sheldon and Savannah Jewett. It is located just off Vermont Route 118 on Langley Bridge Road. The bridge is 85 feet long and rests on abutments of stone and concrete. It features vertical wood siding that extends around the bridge portals to protect the trusses from the elements. Also of note is the fact that the siding does not extend the full height of the sides, but leaves an opening under each eave. The gabled roof is composed of standing seam metal. The bridge deck is made of thick wooden planks. This well-preserved covered bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
