Description
Mount Fuji is located approximately 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, Japan. It is the tallest mountain in Japan at 12,388 feet and the 7th highest peak of an island in the world. It is a dormant volcano, last having erupted in 1707-1708. The symmetrical cone is snow-capped for about five months a year and, on a clear day, can be seen from Tokyo. Mount Fuji is one of Japan's three holy mountains and is surrounded by 25 religious and cultural shrines in the area. It is a place of special beauty and one of Japan's most historic sites. For these reasons it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. This magnificent site has inspired artists and poets for centuries and is one of Japan's most important tourist attractions. Because the mountain is shrouded in clouds so often (it is totally clear only about 60 days per year) to get a shot like this one is a truly lucky event.
