Artist's Description

Nijo Castle in Kyoto, Japan, is a large complex containing two palaces, the Ninomaru and the Honmaru plus many other buildings. The castle consists of two concentric rings of fortifications and occupies 68 acres. Construction of the castle was completed in 1626; however, as is common in Japan, the portions of the castle have been struck by lightning or otherwise burned and replaced. The palace served as the Japanese Imperial Palace for a few years and was donated to the city of Kyoto in 1939. It is a busy tourist attraction and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
