Description
The Palace of Catherine I, also known as Pushkin's Palace, is an enormous, opulent palace conceived by Peter the Great, who ruled Russia in the 18th century, as a monument to his wife, Catherine. The immense palace was completed in 1756, having had four different architects working on it. It is nearly 1km. in circumference and encompasses a massive ground area as well. The blue and white exterior is embellished with over 100 kg. of gold and is a signature site in St. Petersburg. The interior rooms of the palace are no less opulent than the exterior, with huge rooms, extensive detailing, including gilded carvings, amber panels and mosaics featuring gemstones. The antiquities in the interior rival even those of the famed Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
The only way to fully appreciate this magnificent palace is to visit it in person. Describing the rooms, details and ornamentation would take volumes.
(The Catherine I Palace is also known as the Pushkin Palace, named after Alexander Pushkin, the former poet laureate of Russia.) The Catherine I Palace is part of a group of monuments in St. Petersburg that are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
