Description
The Quechee Covered Bridge is a beautiful covered bridge in Quechee, Vermont. The covered bridge was constructed in 2011 after the original bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Irene. The original bridge was a steel stinger bridge that was built in 1970. The bridge was 72 feet long and sat on weak abutments. After it was destroyed, the town held a meeting to vote on a new bridge.
The bridge was redesigned and reconstructed as a covered bridge by the town. Quechee Covered Bridge was constructed with a blend of modern and historic elements, resulting in a beautiful bridge that seems old but can manage current traffic needs. To lessen the possibility of future flood damage, it was lengthened to 85 feet. The bridge offers two-lane for traffic to flow and a covered pedestrian walkway on one side. The Quechee Dam Waterfall and Simon Pearce can be seen from the walkway. A tumble of rocks leads down to a picturesque gorge to the east, with the Ottauquechee cutting a winding channel through its middle.
