Description
The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, is an oval amphitheater constructed in 72 A.D. by the emperor Vespasian. It is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and is still the largest standing amphitheater in the world today.
The Colosseum is constructed using travertine limestone, tuff and brick-faced concrete. It could accommodate between 50,000-80,000 spectators. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles including animal hunts, executions and dramas.
Although the Colosseum has sustained much damage over the centuries, it still remains an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and is listed as one of the New7Wonders of the World.
