Description
This period house in downtown Savannah, Georgia, USA, is typical of the variety of architecture to be seen in the central, Historic District. The original town plan was designed by colony founder James Oglethorpe, who established Savannah in 1733. It is the oldest city in Georgia, and one of the oldest cities in the United States.
Sitting on a bluff overlooking the Savannah River, Savannah's Historic District contains 22 parklike squares and is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the USA. It is the county seat of Chatham County, Georgia.
A strategic port city in the American Revolution and the Civil War, the Port of Savannah is one of the largest ports in the United States today and is undergoing a major enlargement as its importance continues to rise.
As a tourist destination, Savannah ranks with Charleston, S.C. and Boston, as one of the most visited destinations in the US. In addition to the Historic District, Savannah boasts fine dining, shopping and is close to the Georgia coast, which offers several choice beaches. The marshes near the beach areas offer boating and fishing opportunities as well as just being beautiful scenic areas.
