Description
Rome is the Capital city of Italy. With a population of nearly 3,000,000, it is the third most populous city in the European Union. Rome's history spans 28 centuries. It was the capital of the vast Roman Empire, which encompassed nearly all of the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The city boast thousands of ancient structures and artifacts. Probably the most famous of the ancient structures is the Colosseum. In this large stadium gladiator events and animal slayings were held. The Colosseum is called an amphitheater, distinguishing it from hippodromes and circuses, which were usually rectangular and built for athletics. The Roman Colosseum is oval in shape.
The Colosseum in Rome is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
