Description
The Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon near Page, in Northern Arizona, U.S.A. It is situated on Navajo land and includes two separated sections, referred to as Upper Antelope Canyon (the Crack) and Lower Antelope Canyon, (the Corkscrew).
The Navajo name for the Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse bighanilini, which means the place where water runs through rocks. Lower Antelope Canyon is Hazdistazi, or spiral rock arches. Both are in the Le Chee Chapter of the Navajo Nation and are only accessible by guided tours given by Native American guides.
Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo sandstone due to flash flooding and other sub-aerial processes. Rainwater runs through the extensive basin above the slot canyons, picking up speed as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways have eroded away, deepening the corridors and smoothing hard edges to form "flowing shapes".
Antelope Canyon is a popular location for sightseers and photographers and a source of business for the Navajo Nation. It only became accessible for tours in 1997.
