Description
Zion National Park is an American National Park in Southwestern Utah. It was named a National Park in 1919 and contains 146,597 acres. The most prominent feature of the park is Zion Canyon, a 15 mile long canyon formed by the Virgin River over the course of millions of years. The high, vertical walls of the canyon are of reddish and tan sandstone and are up to 2640 feet in height in places.
Human habitation began over 8000 years ago when small groups of Native Americans developed communities in the area. In more recent times Mormon pioneers discovered the canyon and were so overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Zion Canyon that they named it after the Old Testament name for the city of Jerusalem. The park supports more than 800 species of native plants and offers numerous hiking trails. The elevation of Zion ranges from 3666 to 8726 feet. At the end of the 15 mile canyon is "The Narrows" a place where the 1000 foot high canyon walls come together, in some spots being only 20 feet apart. In order to "hike" the "Narrows" it is necessary to walk through the Virgin River for miles upstream. Outfitters in the area rent gear for this purpose to those who are willing to brave the 38 degree water.
One of the most prominent features of Zion Canyon is the "Court of the Patriarchs" a three rock structure named for Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The canyon contains many other beautiful rock structures that add to the beauty of the 15 mile canyon.
