The Library of Celsus, located near Ephesus, in the Asian portion of Turkey, is a tribute to Roman architecture and construction and to the Roman Senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus. The magnificent building was completed around 117 A.D. and has now been largely restored. The design, according to Roman architecture, contained a large platform with several entrances leading in to the interior. Numerous columns surrounded the platform on the ground level and also on the upper level. The Corinthian columns and all the other details were typical of the attention the Romans paid to their buildings and have withstood the test of time. The building was so large that is could house 12,000 scrolls. It also served as a mausoleum for Celsus, which was a very unusual ritual for the Romans. The Library of Celsus was the third largest library in the ancient world.
