Description
Peterhof is located in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was built as the summer home of Peter the Great. It is a large palace, built in response to the Palace of Versailles in France. Peterhof is actually a series of buildings; however the one depicted here is the largest and main palace. It contains thirty rooms all laden with gold and hundreds of art treasures. Surrounding the main palace are 64 fountains, all fed by springs and using no pumps for their release. The large pond at the back of the main palace collects the water from the fountains and drains it into a channel that connects to the River Neva and then to the Gulf of Finland. The landscaping is fabulous and the opulence of the Peterhof lies is stark contrast to the poverty that was Russia for so many generations. The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
