Description
The magnificent Ravenel Bridge connects downtown Charleston with Mt. Pleasant, S.C., USA. The iconic, uniquely designed cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River was completed in 2005. It was designed by the famous design firm of Parsons Brinckeroff and constructed as a design-build project, meaning that a single contract was signed to both design and construct the bridge.
The Ravenel Bridge features two main towers, each 575 feet high. The total length of the structure is 13,200 feet, with the main span stretching 1546 feet between the towers. The deck is 186 feet above the Cooper River and is supported by 128 individual cables anchored inside the diamond towers. The roadway consists of four lanes in each direction plus a bicycle-pedestrian path along the south side of the bridge.
The bridge is designed to withstand winds in excess of 300 mph and an earthquake of about 7.4 on the Richter Scale.
The Ravenel Bridge was named the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge to honor the former Congressman and South Carolina State Senator who was instrumental in obtaining the funding for the massive project, which totaled over $700 million in final cost.
