Artist's Description
The Tenryu-ji Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple located in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto, Japan. The temple was founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji and construction was completed in 1345. The temple is held in high esteem and is ranked number one among Kyoto's so-called Five Mountains. Its extensive garden features the usual components of a Japanese garden, but it also extends up the mountainside behind the temple. This gives this garden a distinctive appearance. The Tenryu-ji Temple was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
