Description
Willemstad, Curacao, is the capital city of the southern Caribbean island of Curacao. The original settlement on the island was established in 1634, when the Dutch captured the island from Spain. Because of its close proximity to Venezuela and its deep water harbor, Curacao became an important seaports in the Caribbean. Curacao is served by an international airport and boasts the Avalon University School of Medicine. Also of interest is that a number of major league baseball players are from Curacao. The oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere is located in Willemstad.
The historic center of Willemstad has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
