Description
The Buick Centurion XP-301 debuted at the 1956 Motorama (General Motors' automobile exposition). Perhaps its most visionary feature was a rear-mounted camera with a wide-angle lens and a 4x6 inch view screen embedded in the dashboard (a seemingly impossible feature for its day). The camera , paired with the car's transparent bubble top and panoramic wraparound windshield, meant that no rearview mirror was necessary. The Centurion's aerodynamic body matched its stunning interior, which was upholstered in aircraft-inspired Elektron Red and included four individual bucket seats with wide, horizontal pleats, individual headrests, and retractable seatbelts.
Several of the exterior design elements found their way into production Chevrolets and Buicks as early as 1969 and others appeared in production cars from 1971-1973.
