Description
Located on a high plateau adjacent to the Dead Sea, Masada was the scene of one of the most heroic and massive battles and suicides in history. When the Romans captured Jerusalem and destroyed the second Jewish Temple in 70 CE, they then marched southward toward Masada, where a band of 960 Jewish zealots had bravely defended the fortress built by Herod. For nearly two years, the mighty Roman forces attempted to take Masada, and finally, after building a large ramp to bring their soldiers to the top of the plateau, reach the Jewish stronghold, only to find that the Jews had committed mass suicide, rather than succumb to Roman rule. Today, the remains of Herods palaces and the fortress at the top are one of the most important tourist stops in Israel. Masada was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
