Description
Toledo, Spain, located in South Central Spain, is the capital of the province of Toledo. The old city is located on a mountaintop surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River. It is known as the "City of Three Cultures" for the influences of the Christians, Muslims and Jews. As was the case with many other Spanish and European cities, Toledo lived under the rule of a number of dynasties over the centuries. One of its main influences was under King Ferdinand III, under whose rule the Cathedral depicted here was begun. This cathedral was generally considered to be the most Hispanic of Spanish Gothic cathedrals.
Construction was begun in 1226. Toledo also embodies many Muslim and Jewish influences and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
